Easy way to refill a black 74 HP ink cartridge ~ The HP 74 black ink cartridges are known for their high page yield and solid performance. They can’t be damaged easily and can print up to 200 pages, even after been refilled. If you refill them with pigmented ink, you could get even more pages out of it, since this is the kind of ink this cartridge was manufactured with. After you’ve finished with this cleaning procedure which, again, is not mandatory and can choose to do it or not, you may proceed with the refilling procedure. We recommend you clean the print heads after refilling your cartridges three times in a row.
Step #1:
First, put the cartridge somewhere you can easily clean an ink spill from. We don’t recommend you use any white materials, since you won’t be able to remove the ink from them. On the contrary, we suggest you use a black material or cloth, even a flat surface that you can clean ink from.
Step #2:
Now you may proceed to removing the label located on the top of the cartridge. We recommend you always remove the label before refilling it, because it allows the necessary amount of air into the cartridge.
The air helps the prints to reach maximum quality, and the cartridge to reach the performance it was made for. Remove this label carefully to avoid damaging it.
You may several orifices in the cartridge to help spread the ink inside it.
Step #3:
Add 17ml of ink as slowly as possible to the cartridge. We need you to do this slowly to help the ink spread inside the cartridge, and to soak up the sponge in it.
Step #4:
Once you’ve filled the cartridge with ink, all you’ll need to do is print a test sheet with it. We recommend you leave the cartridge inside the printer from now on.

If your ink cartridge has any problems after being refilled, such as blinking, please try solving them with the following steps:
- Remove the ink cartridge and clean the contacts on it with a wet napkin.
- You should also clean the contacts on the printer in the same way.
- If this doesn’t solve the problem., turn your printer off for 10 minutes and disconnect the power cord. You may plug the cable back in the printer and place the cartridge in it after this time has has passed.
